Optibag and its customer Øras (Øvre Romerike Avfallsselskap) a bit north of Oslo celebrate 20 years of food waste collection using the Optibag technology. Since 1998, inhabitants of the municipalities of Ullensaker, Eidsvoll, Nannestad and Hurdal sort food waste in bags. At the time of commissioning, the optical readers were equipped with photocells and could only detect black and not-black. Since several years back, the plant is equipped with a modern digital camera system which can read up to 12 different colours, i.e. waste fractions.
The collection food waste is digested to environmentally friendly biogas which is used as transportation fuel, replacing fossil fuel.
